The Terroir Behind Xisto Cru Branco 2022

Grape Composition

The blend is as intriguing as it is masterful, with a predominance of Rabigato (70%) supported by Códega, Gouveio, and Viosinho Dozelino Branco (10% each). These indigenous grape varieties are carefully selected to create a wine that beautifully reflects the Douro Valley’s diverse viticultural character.

  • Rabigato (70%) – Known for its bright acidity and citrus-driven profile.
  • Códega (10%) – Adds subtle floral notes and body.
  • Gouveio (10%) – Layers amplitude and hints of stone fruit.
  • Viosinho Dozelino Branco (10%) – Contributes freshness and aromatic complexity.

Old Vines, Elevated Vineyards, and Unique Soils

The grapes hail from sustainably farmed vineyards, established between 1920 and 1933. At an elevation of 650 to 700 meters, these old vines are rooted in mica schist soils, renowned for imparting minerality and structure to wines.

2022 Vintage: A Darwinian Narrative

The 2022 vintage in the Douro Valley was marked by unprecedented climatic challenges, notably extreme heat and severe drought conditions. The three months leading up to the harvest were among the hottest and driest ever recorded, with July temperatures peaking at 47°C (117°F) in Pinhão. This intense heat and lack of rainfall led to reduced yields, with grape bunches developing smaller berries and limited juice. Despite these adversities, the grapes harvested exhibited remarkable concentration and quality, resulting in wines with notable freshness and structure.

Similar climatic challenges were observed in other renowned wine regions during the 2022 vintage, emphasizing a global narrative of adaptation and resilience in the face of extreme weather:

  • Bordeaux, France: The growing season was characterized by a prolonged heatwave and drought, which led to early harvests. Despite the harsh conditions, the vintage is considered exceptional, with wines displaying both concentration and balance—testament to Bordeaux's long-standing expertise in vineyard management during difficult seasons.

  • Napa Valley, California: Here, the vintage was described as a "tale of two harvests." Early heat spikes in the growing season were followed by cooler periods, creating variability in ripening. This resulted in wines that are both bold and balanced, reflecting Napa’s ability to navigate increasingly unpredictable climatic shifts.

  • Barossa Valley, Australia: Unlike Douro and Napa, Barossa experienced a wet winter, providing ample soil moisture heading into the growing season. However, a hailstorm in January caused damage in certain vineyards. Despite this, the vintage yielded wines with good natural acidity and flavor concentration, showcasing the region’s capacity to overcome sudden weather extremes.

These parallels across major wine regions illustrate not only the global scale of climatic challenges faced during the 2022 vintage but also the ingenuity and adaptability of winemakers worldwide. Whether in the Douro Valley or the Barossa Valley, the story of this vintage is one of survival, with producers crafting wines of remarkable depth and character against the odds.

Minimal Intervention Winemaking

Luis Seabra employs a hands-off approach to winemaking, focusing on minimal intervention techniques that allow the wine’s true character and the vineyard’s terroir to take center stage. In this philosophy, Seabra stands alongside other renowned winemakers such as Márcio Lopes, António Madeira, and several other champions of MI winemaking in Portugal, all of whom are dedicated to crafting wines that authentically reflect the land from which they come.

Seabra’s approach begins with spontaneous fermentation in used French oak barrels, utilizing only native yeasts. This natural fermentation method ensures that the wine retains the unique microbial signature of the vineyard, enhancing its authenticity. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in the same barrels, allowing it to develop complexity through gentle oxygen exposure while maintaining balance and purity. Importantly, Seabra avoids excessive oak influence by using older barrels and ensures they are seldom left empty, keeping the process seamless and consistent.

In line with his commitment to minimalism, Seabra refrains from bâtonnage (lees stirring) and eschews the use of stabilizers or additives, resulting in a wine that is as unadulterated as possible. The result is a precise, mineral-driven wine that speaks directly of its origin—bold, elegant, and free from over-manipulation.

This minimalist approach, shared by like-minded peers in the Minimal Intervention  winemaking movement, positions Seabra at the forefront of a growing trend in the Douro Valley and beyond: crafting wines that are not only technically sound but also deeply expressive of their unique terroir.
