Luis Pato Vinha Formal 2002

The 2002 Vinha Formal is a single-varietal Bical wine from the Formal vineyard, (situated on an eastern-facing slope, first mapped in 1866 by António Augusto Aguiar in the Agriculture Kingdom Report), in Óis-do-Bairro, where Bairrada&s chalk-rich soils are most prominent. While typically made entirely from Bical, certain vintages incorporate a small proportion of Cerceal, depending on the year. Aging methods have evolved, transitioning from chestnut barrels to French Allier oak, and more recently to chestnut and concrete eggs, typically for about six months.

It was fermented and aged for nine months in used French oak barrels, followed by approximately 22 years of bottle aging at the winery. With time, Bical develops into a waxy, floral wine with candied citrus notes.

This vintage displays a yellow-gold color with aromas of toast, spice, and nuts, complemented by crystalline citrus and vibrant acidity. It offers a balanced weight, savory complexity, and a finish of toasted lemon peel.

A true Bairrada classic, this wine is well-structured and versatile, drinking beautifully now and capable of cellaring for 20 years or more. It pairs excellently with a range of dishes.
